A union leader for more than 8 years, Alphonso Mayfield is an emerging leader in the labor movement who in a very short time changed the direction of the labor movement in Florida by bridging the gap between communities and their unions.

Born in Mississippi in a working family household, Alphonso Mayfield has the first-hand experience of plight and troubles that hard-working middle-class families face. Inspired by the philosophies and approach of his mother, his mission is to revitalize the union movement through dedication to an agenda that is driven by the members and prioritizes economic, social justice and fairness.

I am originally a native of Toledo, Ohio. My association with the labor movement started in 1972 when I became a member of local UAW 1058. At that time I was working on the paint line at an auto parts plant. I joined FPSU in 2009 as the Chief of Staff. I am married to Chris Allamanno and have three children, Charlie, JJ, and Ian.

I am the Deputy Chief of Staff at FPSU where I am responsible for negotiating collective bargaining agreements as well as researching and representing workers in disciplinary cases. In the past, I have worked as Research Analyst at FPSU and as an Organizer at SEIU Local 5 AZ.

 

Alex Ring, Political Director

I am a Florida native, born and raised in Palm Beach County. I have earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Political Science at Florida State University. I have worked in the Florida House of Representatives’ Minority Office and as Senior Legislative Aide in State House District 100, taking a couple leaves of absence to work on the 2008 Presidential and 2010 Attorney General races. I enjoy exploring Florida’s politically, culturally and naturally diverse environment.

 

Afifa Khaliq, Communications Director

My career in the rights-based movement started 15 years ago when I joined the international development sector. Prior to that, I was working as a journalist and a teacher. I have a Masters degree in Mass Communications with the focus on Development Support Communications. I joined FPSU in 2011 as State Director for the Fair Economy Campaign. Currently, I am working as Communications Director. I am married and live in West Palm Beach.

My organizing background stems from a long history of about 15 years. I started organizing in the fields of upstate New York with migrant workers, which lead me into community organizing. My deep passion for this work was a motivation to join the labor movement. Presently, I am working for FPSU as Lead Organizer working out of Palm Spring Office.

I worked for 20+ years for nonprofit organizations where I used my skills & abilities to helping others. I started working as an Organizer with SEIU-FPSU in 2007. I represent worker of the City of St. Pete., CDI and Manatee Head Start programs. I am very active in the Tampa Bay and St. Pete community. I serve on the Children Board of Tampa. I am also a member and Secretary of Operation Rainbow Push Coalition of Florida, NAACP of Tampa, and the CDC of Tampa.

Maria Jose’s involvement in community work started in high school. She found her drive for community engagement and activism throughout college.

She continued her activism after graduating with a B.A. in Political Science/International Studies from the University of South Florida. She was introduced to the labor movement through the 2012 presidential campaign with the SEIU Breakthrough Campaign as a Community Organizer.

She continues her passion for socio-economic, gender, racial, immigrant, and inclusive justice working as a Community/Labor Organizer for SEIU/FPSU. She has two daughters, a blind poodle, and resides in St. Petersburg FL.

I moved to Clermont, Florida in 1989 and became a School Bus Driver for Lake County School District. I got involved with SEIU in 1995 during an organizing campaign. I became a steward in the Transportation Department and in 2000 became the chief steward. I was also a part of the bargaining and Labor Management Team. In 2006, I left my job as a bus driver and joined FPSU as an Organizer for the Lake County School employees. I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my beautiful family.

Originally from Oklahoma moved to Florida in 1982 to attend University of Central Florida. I am currently working as the Operations Manager in SEIU-FPSU. I have over 20 years experience working in a financial capacity with corporate and non-profit companies. I am happily married with 3 beautiful children.

 

Angelina Whitbeck, Data Coordinator

I am the Data Coordinator for SEIU-FPSU where my duties are database maintenance and managing the front desk. Prior to working for SEIU, I worked for the Orange County Library system as a Reference Clerk. I moved to Florida from Washington State in 1998. I received my High School Diploma from Auburn Academy. I plan to continue my formal education.
